A press conference on the progress of preparations for the 15th National Games and the National Paralympic Games was held in Guangzhou on June 18. According to the organizers, this edition of the Games highlights three major features:
First, Innovation – This is reflected in the brand-new hosting model, as it marks the first time that Guangdong, Hong Kong, and Macao are co-hosting the National Games. To ensure the smooth organization of both the 15th National Games and the National Paralympic Games, a regular coordination and communication mechanism among the three regions has been established. Additionally, the opening and closing ceremonies will take place in two different cities—Guangzhou and Shenzhen—setting a new precedent for the National Games.
Second, Scale – The number of participants is expected to reach a record high. It is estimated that 36,000 athletes and 45,000 volunteers will take part. The National Games will feature 57 major sports, while the National Paralympic Games will include 46, making this the largest edition in history in terms of both scale and participation.
Third, Diversity – This is evident in the number of host cities. Unlike previous editions, there will be no centralized athletes’ village. Events will be held across 19 cities, including Hong Kong, Macao, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen—making it the edition with the most host cities. This multi-city hosting approach allows spectators to experience a wide array of local cuisines, scenic attractions, and cultural characteristics. Among the 19 cities are mountainous towns nestled among peaks, as well as coastal cities with blue seas and skies. The 15th National Games will truly be a grand sports event spanning both mountains and seas.
