Asian Weightlifting Championships: Chinese Women's Team Breaks Three World Records in One Day
May 14 2025

The 2025 Asian Weightlifting Championships continued in Jiangshan, Quzhou, Zhejiang Province, where the Chinese team maintained its dominant performance. Yang Qiuxia set a new world record in the women's 71kg snatch, while Liao Guifang broke two world records in the women's 76kg category — the snatch and total lift. Notably, as this competition marks the farewell to the old weight classes of the Paris Olympic cycle, all world records set during the event will be permanently archived.

During the first four days of the tournament, the Chinese team had already set multiple records. Zhao Jinhong lifted 90kg in the women's 45kg snatch to set a new world record. Zhang Haiqin claimed all three gold medals in the women's 55kg category and broke the youth world records in snatch, clean and jerk, and total. Pan Yunhua also broke the Asian youth records in clean and jerk and total in the men's 89kg category.

On the fifth day, the Chinese women’s team delivered another strong performance. In the women's 71kg category, Yang Qiuxia lifted 122kg to break the snatch world record and win gold in that segment. She also won two silver medals with a 140kg clean and jerk and a 262kg total.

In the women's 76kg event, although Liao Guifang narrowly missed setting a new world record in the clean and jerk at 157kg, she still swept the gold medals with a snatch of 125kg, a clean and jerk of 154kg, and a total of 279kg. Her lifts broke the world records in both snatch and total.

In the concurrent women's 81kg competition, Wu Yan lifted 116kg in the snatch, gaining an 11kg lead that gave her confidence in the clean and jerk. She opened with an easy 136kg and eventually lifted 147kg in the clean and jerk, finishing with a 263kg total and taking all three gold medals.

In the evening's men’s 96kg final, 2003-born rising star Qian Feixiang faced tough competitors like Iran’s Ali Elipour and Thailand’s Sala Sombat. The snatch competition was intense, with Qian earning bronze by lifting 173kg. He then successfully lifted 207kg in his third clean and jerk attempt, finishing with a 380kg total.

It is worth noting that the Chinese team has shown a promising “young talents rising” trend in this championship. Athletes like Zhao Jinhong, Zhang Haiqin, and Liao Guifang are all born after 2000. This deep talent pool strengthens China’s confidence in adapting to the new weight category changes that will take effect starting in June this year, as part of the Los Angeles Olympic cycle adjustments.
