Diamond League Opener: China Wins 1 Gold, 1 Silver, 3 Bronze; Several Athletes Set Personal Bests

The 2025 World Athletics Diamond League global season opener concluded last weekend at the Egret Stadium in Xiamen. A total of 21 Chinese athletes participated, earning 1 gold, 1 silver, and 3 bronze medals, with two athletes setting new personal bests.


Zhang Mingkun claimed the gold medal in the men’s long jump with a leap of 8.18 meters. Rising star Chen Yujie ran a personal best of 22.99 seconds in the women’s 200 meters final, finishing fourth and once again breaking her own Asian U20 record.

This leg of the competition featured 14 official events and 2 pre-program events. Zhang Mingkun, who placed seventh in the men’s long jump at the Paris Olympics, had previously set an indoor personal best of 8.24 meters in Portugal earlier this February. In his first outdoor competition of the 2025 season, he secured the title with a jump of 8.18 meters. Fellow Chinese athlete Shu Heng finished fourth with 8.08 meters. The silver and bronze medals went to Australia’s Adcock and the USA’s Dundee, respectively.


In the men's triple jump, Zhu Yaming impressed in his outdoor season debut, surpassing the 17-meter mark with a leap of 17.03 meters to take silver. Su Wen placed fourth with 16.78 meters. Jamaica's Scott won the event with 17.27 meters.


In the men’s 110m hurdles, Liu Junqian clocked a personal best of 13.24 seconds to claim bronze and successfully qualified for the Tokyo World Championships. In the women's shot put, Olympic champion Gong Lijiao threw 19.62 meters to win bronze. Dutch star Jessica Schilder secured the gold with a first throw of 20.47 meters, while America’s Jackson took silver with 20.31 meters.
