On May 13th (Beijing time), at the 2025 WTA 1000 Rome Open, China’s top player Zheng Qinwen faced former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu in the women’s singles Round of 16. Zheng won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, stringing together seven consecutive games at one point to secure a 2-0 victory and advance to the quarterfinals. This result ties her personal best in Rome, marking her third straight year reaching the last eight at this tournament. Zheng will face Aryna Sabalenka in the quarterfinals—an opponent she has lost to in all six of their previous encounters.

World Rankings:
Zheng Qinwen is currently ranked No. 8 in the world and is seeded 8th in the tournament. She was also a finalist at the Australian Open. Andreescu, the 2019 US Open champion, is ranked No. 121.

The two players had met once before—in Toronto in 2022—where Zheng defeated Andreescu 2-1.

Match Recap:
This was their second career meeting. Zheng started strong, breaking and holding serve to take a 3-0 lead. Andreescu fought back to win two consecutive games, but Zheng broke again to go up 4-2. Andreescu then mounted a comeback of her own, breaking serve twice to take the lead. However, Zheng responded by winning three straight games—including two breaks—to take the first set 7-5.
In the second set, Zheng dominated from the outset, winning four consecutive games to go up 4-0 and extending her streak to seven games across the two sets. Andreescu managed to break back in the fifth game, but Zheng immediately responded with another break and a hold to seal the set 6-1, clinching the match 2-0.
